The sequence of manipulation matters: Abstract thinking offsets ego-depletion when induced before, but not after a depleting task

چکیده

Abstract Based on theoretical and empirical studies dealing with the facilitation inhibiting effects of different psychic distances (low vs. high construal-level), we tested if exhibition self-control under a construal-level is more efficient less resource exhausting mode, compared to low construal level. Prior already showed that execution results in lower has facilitating self-control. We expand upon these by: 1. operationalizing whole process ego-depletion through two sequential tasks, 2. combining one manipulation 2 by design 3. varying sequence manipulations. In Experiment 1, examined how participants before after being depleted, affects performance final task. 2, re-tested offset another measurement, condition manipulated first. 1 effect remained existent when was stroop test, but it offset, stoop test. Drawing measurements perceived available resources were able rule out an alternative approach, explaining similar attentional shift towards reduced construal-level.

Adequacy of the Sequential-Task Paradigm in Evoking Ego-Depletion and How to Improve Detection of Ego-Depleting Phenomena

Self-control is defined as individuals' capacity to alter, modify, change, or override impulses, desires, and habitual responses (Baumeister, 2002; Muraven et al., 2005). Capacity for self-control is important and adaptive. Without it, we would be " slaves " to habits and impulses and unable to engage in sustained, goal-directed behavior. Loss of self-control has been shown to be related to num...

“When the going gets tough, who keeps going?” Depletion sensitivity moderates the ego-depletion effect

Self-control relies on a limited resource that can get depleted, a phenomenon that has been labeled ego-depletion. We argue that individuals may differ in their sensitivity to depleting tasks, and that consequently some people deplete their self-control resource at a faster rate than others. In three studies, we assessed individual differences in depletion sensitivity, and demonstrate that depl...

Ego depletion interferes with rule-defined category learning but not non-rule-defined category learning

Considerable research on category learning has suggested that many cognitive and environmental factors can have a differential effect on the learning of rule-defined (RD) categories as opposed to the learning of non-rule-defined (NRD) categories. Prior research has also suggested that ego depletion can temporarily reduce the capacity for executive functioning and cognitive flexibility. The pres...

Ego-depletion 1 Ego-depletion: Theory and Evidence

Self-control all too often fails. Despite people‟s best intentions and considerable negative outcomes, people often find themselves at the losing end of resisting temptation, combating urges, and changing their behavior. One reason for these failures may be that exerting selfcontrol depletes a limited resource (ego-depletion) that is necessary for the success of selfcontrol. Hence, after exerti...
